- Renowned British-Nigerian multidisciplinary artist Yinka Ilori, famous for his work in communities across the capital, has today [27 April 2021] unveiled his latest large-scale public installation “As you pass me by, know that it is nothing but love from me”, in Tottenham Hale, London.
- The artwork is part of his role as the official Artist in Residence for Argent Related’s landmark scheme, Heart of Hale, in Tottenham Hale’s regeneration area. Argent Related brings together Argent – best known for iconic destinations such as King’s Cross – with the most prominent, privately-owned real estate firm in the US, Related.
- During his two-year residency, Yinka Ilori will deliver a number of installations for the public realm, from permanent street furniture to temporary wall art, cementing the area’s growing reputation as a creative hotspot.
- The Heart of Hale development will feature over 1,000 new homes once complete, 15 retail spaces, co-working and office space, a new health centre serving 30,000 local people, and three public squares, all next to Tottenham Hale station.
The artistic collaboration with Yinka Ilori, who was awarded an MBE earlier this year, fuses art and design together to tell the unique story of Heart of Hale. “As you pass me by, know that it is nothing but love from me”, the first piece as part of Ilori’s residency, is a celebration of the existing community in Tottenham Hale, and shows the possibility for all the different local communities – new and old – to be included in the area’s exciting future.
Yinka Ilori has worked closely alongside the Argent Related team to develop and design a remarkable installation that is set to transform the area into a marriage of colour. The company is known for its artistic collaborations including Related’s recent Climate Change Week installation which transformed the Metronome in New York’s Union Square into a Climate Clock demonstrating the urgent need for action.
Yinka Ilori will develop several installations for the Heart of Hale development over a two- year period, cementing the area’s growing reputation as a creative hotspot, with 1 in 5 residents currently working in the creative industries
The vision behind Yinka Ilori’s residency takes inspiration from the historical context of the area and the relationship between Tottenham Hale and the rest of London. A place with a strong character and fearless spirit, the unveiling of Ilori’s first public artwork comes as many of the area’s independent and creative businesses start to reopen with the easing of lockdown restrictions.
This first artwork sets the tone for what is to come from Ilori – joyful interventions which serve as places to gather for all. Ilori’s residency will also span community outreach and engagement, with the artist set to take part in a season of summer programming organised by Argent Related for their Heart of Hale scheme, designed to engage with the burgeoning artistic talent the area has to offer.
Talking about his Heart of Hale residency, Yinka Ilori, said:
“Partnering with Argent Related and this exciting regeneration offers an opportunity to tell the story of this area through the mode of art and design. Each installation aims to bring life and joy to a space in-progress, a space in disruption. This artwork will offer a moment of pause amidst our busy lives, and a chance to playfully reflect on the richly diverse communities that form the backbone of this city.”
Vickie Hayward of Company, Place Ltd – a cultural consultant for Heart of Hale and Tottenham resident commented:
“It is an absolute honour to work alongside Yinka Ilori to bring his vision for the area to life. This work is the first in a series of public realm interventions from Ilori, commissioned for the Heart of Hale development. In this series of commissions, Ilori harmoniously fuses together the old and the new, through a colour palette encouraged by the diverse range of wildlife found around the River Lea, and from the colours of the local area.”
The Heart of Hale development is set to enrich and enliven Tottenham Hale, delivering a fully integrated neighbourhood with homes, retail, restaurants, co-working and office space. The scheme is vital for the future vision of the area, delivering green spaces, a new health centre serving 30,000 people, improved road networks and a bus station, as well as affordable housing and new job opportunities.
Having undergone significant transformation, the area is often touted as the next big property hotspot and is the most affordable location on the well-connected Victoria line. Offering a unique opportunity to experience a Zone 3 location with a Zone 1 lifestyle, the area is perfect for first-time buyers as well as families. It is within ideal reach of London’s globally renowned universities, the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the West End for shopping and nightlife and is only 30-minutes from London Stansted Airport. Tottenham Hale is also just 11-minutes from the Eurostar at King’s Cross St Pancras which connects residents to Paris in just two hours.
Construction on the Heart of Hale development started last year and is being brought forward by Argent Related.
Tom Goodall, Partner and Head of Residential for Argent Related said:
“We are proud to partner with acclaimed artist Yinka Ilori who represents the creativity of the area and the sense of place we are developing at Heart of Hale. We don’t just build buildings, we help shape places in which communities and neighbourhoods can thrive. Art, culture, and events are a critical part of this. Heart of Hale is generating strong demand and we are looking forward to bringing forward the next phase of development in the coming months.”
