King’s Cross has today, 7 September 2021, welcomed a brand-new sustainability initiative – CLUBZERO. Aiming to cut down on landfill packaging, CLUBZERO will enable customers to take advantage of reusable containers without having to carry their own.
Designed to keep food and drink hotter or cooler for longer, the reusable containers, which use up to 50% less CO2 than landfill packaging, can be dropped off at any return station across the King’s Cross estate and broader neighbourhood. CLUBZERO will then collect and clean used containers, before returning them back to participating food and drink outlets ready to be used again.
The initiative, which makes its UK debut in King’s Cross, has been launched in partnership with Camden Council and recycling specialists, First Mile.
The first food and drink brands on the King’s Cross Estate to be taking part in the scheme are Notes Coffee, who offer speciality coffee, craft beers, wines, and seasonally inspired food, and Hiden – Japanese Curry Lab, an independently owned Japanese Curry speciality shop in Coal Drops Yard.
CLUBZERO is just one of many sustainability initiatives at King’s Cross, which already diverts 100% of its waste from landfill and which recently signed a landmark green gas deal which saw the estate switch entirely to renewable gas sources.
Anthea Harries, Head of Assets at King’s Cross commented: “We’re delighted to welcome CLUBZERO to King’s Cross. It’s a brilliant opportunity for food and drink outlets in and around the neighbourhood to be more sustainable, as well as helping those who live, work, and spend time at King’s Cross reduce their plastic use. CLUBZERO sits alongside multiple other sustainability incentives across the King’s Cross estate, as we move towards a more environmentally conscious, zero waste business model.”
Fabiana Bacci, CEO at Hiden – Japanese Curry Lab, said: “Quality of food, love for people and environmental awareness are at the core of everything we do at Hiden – Japanese Curry Lab so we are very excited to start our collaboration with CLUBZERO – they embody the same values and principles we do. Hiden’s serving options have always been the greenest on the market and with CLUBZERO we take a further step to facilitate a shift in the buying and consuming behaviour of the street food scenario.”
Safia Qureshi, Founder and CEO of CLUBZERO said: “We’re shaping the future of takeaway food and beverage at CLUBZERO and have a big ambition to make London a zero-waste city. We’re giving consumers the right to choose an alternative to single-use packaging. In the same way as we’ve seen choices for consumers beyond meat and beyond dairy, we’re giving consumers the option beyond landfill packaging. The future is returnable packaging, and we are thrilled to be starting with the best partners in the industry.’’
